Many plant owners have retired their coal-fired units because of relatively flat electricity demand growth and increased competition from natural gas and renewables. In 2018, plant owners retired more than 13 GW of coal-fired generation capacity, which is the second-highest annual total for U.S. coal retirements in EIA's dataset; the highest total for coal retirements, at 15 GW, occurred in 2015.
Each coal-fired plant has stringent water quality permits to ensure local waterways are protected. Duke Energy also carefully manages coal combustion residuals, such as fly ash and gypsum, and looks for opportunities to recycle these into other products to reduce the volume landfilled on site.

A scrubber uses powdered limestone and water to remove pollution from the plant's exhaust. Instead of going into the air, the pollution goes into a landfill or into products like concrete and drywall. This ash and sludge consists of coal ash, limestone, and many pollutants, such as toxic metals like lead and mercury.

Coal is burnt in the boiler furnace to produce heat. Carbon in the coal and Oxygen in the air combine to produce Carbon Dioxide and heat. Stage 2. The second stage is the thermodynamic process. The heat from combustion of the coal boils water in the boiler to produce steam. In modern power plant, boilers produce steam at a high pressure and temperature.
